Tensions at Chinese aluminium plant erupt into violence

15th July 2010 – Discontent among Chinese villagers over what they claim amounts to severe environmental pollution has spilled over into violent protests. More than 1000 people were involved in the latest incident which centres around an aluminium smelter in China’s Guanxi Zhuang autonomous region, Reuters reports.

The villagers destroyed equipment at the aluminium plant and threw stones at the police. According to a human rights organisation, more than 100 people were injured in the clashes while 10 vehicles were damaged.

“Villagers have been very unhappy for a long time about the pollution caused by the plant”, a regional newspaper quoted a local official as saying. Riots linked to environmental issues are on the rise in China, at a rate of 30 percent, the Chinese environment minister has reckoned.
